On Tuesday May 4, Mr. Allen took his Spanish II and Spanish III students on the annual trip to Wichita to visit some authentic Hispanic restaurants and shops. The restaurant the students went to this year is called Los Cocos, and when they ordered, they had to speak completely in Spanish. The group also went to a tortilla factory, a supermarket, a bakery, and a candy store. Most of the students were interested in the different candies and the Spanish Coca-Cola, which is more caffeinated than American Coca-Cola.
On the following day, all of Mr. Allen's Spanish students were treated to a break in their traditional studies to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The classes watched a movie over the history of Cinco de Mayo and got to enjoy chips and salsa provided by Mr. Allen and his wife.

On Thursday, April 15th, the Kingman High School Band traveled to Pratt to compete in State Large Group Contest. Unlike solos and ensembles, there is no Regionals for Large Group. There were 24 bands attending at Pratt that day, and each and every one had to play at the very best of their abilities to impress the judges who were very critical this year.
With only a few 1's going out in ratings and a frightening amount of 3's being earned along with the occasional 4, Kingman took the stage with the knowledge that they were going to have to do something pretty fantastic to wow the judges. While they were not among the schools to earn 1's, the band still was proud of the effort they put into their performance, which earned a 2 from all three judges for their performance of 'Encanto' and 'Mars', which they also played at the KHS Spring Concert.
While they didn't earn 1's, the band and Ms. Charbonneau felt really good about how they performed. The judges even commented that it appeared the KHS band had worked very hard on the two pieces ahead of time and that it was just a few minor details that kept them from giving a performance worth a 1 rating.

Monday, February 8th through Friday, February 12th was national Future Business leaders of America (FBLA) week. The local FBLA chapter celebrated this in a couple of ways. On Tuesday the group went around the school and handed out suckers with small FBLA facts attached. Wednesday was wear your FBLA shirt day, and Thursday the group handed out cupcakes during their lunch periods to FBLA members.
Overall, the club used this opportunity to promote FBLA and raise interest in the group amoung the student body for the future.

On the weekend of January 16, two senior students from Kingman High went to audition for the All State Honor Band. While Sarah McPherren, a tuba player, regrettably did not place, Lisa Giefer earned a place for the third year in a row. Lisa, who plays the French Horn, auditioned Saturday, January 16th and placed with a spot in the number 5 chair, comparative to placing 1st chair last year and 2nd chair as a sophomore. Lisa says that she is really excited to have had the opportunity to audition and place three different times in the Honors Band.
Lisa grew up in a musically inclined household, so her music interest showed itself early. Among the three Giefer siblings, Lisa was the only one who took an interest in band. She chose the French Horn in 5th grade and stuck with it all through middle and high school. Lisa is also a member of the Kingman High School Madrigals, and when asked whether she preferred vocal or instrumental performance, Lisa found it difficult to choose. However, she did say that she has more training for the French Horn than for singing. She commented that she has "enjoyed being in band this long."
Obviously, Lisa plays classical music due to the Band course itself although she grew up listening to country music, but she says that her tastes have expanded to include rock and pop as well. As she makes plans for college next year, Lisa plans to pursue a music related career.

On November 7, 2009, four students from Kingman had the opportunity to audition for the South Central District Honor Band. Held at Andover Central, students audition for one of two bands; one is comprised of 5A and 6A schools, and the other is 1-4A.
Seniors Lisa Giefer (French Horn), Sarah McPherren(Tuba), and Melanie Rainosek (Alto Saxophone) and Freshman Danielle Musselwhite (Clarinet) competed along with hundreds of other students in the area. Both Giefer and McPherren will represent Kingman in the Honor Band. McPherren made 4th Chair; Giefer made 2nd. This is Lisa's 4th year making District band, and she has been to State two times.
Auditions consist of five different types of playing. Each student has to play the selected prepared piece, their chromatic scale, one major scale of the judge's choosing, a prepared lyrical piece, and a sight-reading piece. The judges sit with their backs to the performing students, so they have to judge on sound alone.
The performance of the South Central District Honor Band will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Wichita State University.
